Will someone build me a time machine so I can go back and marry Soren Kierkegaard.I enjoyed this book because it shows the quirkiness of his personality, his in-your-face honesty and self-awareness. He possesses depth that only a man of faith could have IMO.

This Diary is an excellent introduction to the life and thought of Kierkegaard. Selections are made from Kierkegaard's ten- thousand page diary and placed in a rough chronological order. Interpersed are separate sections devoted to his Writing his view of Christianity and Christendom. Kierkegaard in the great share of his books used indirect methods of communication, in part because he did not want to preach to the reader. He rather wanted the reader to by thinking for himself come to the right conclusion.In his diaries Kierkegaard was able to express his feelings and opinions more directly. He also in them wrote down his major ideas and worked them out. The Journals are the great mine from which he takes the materials for the books.This Diary opens with a section on his Moods in Life. It has sections on his Childhood and his relation to his Father, on his reading of Paul Moller. The Corsair Affair also has a section of its own. The great turning point of Kierkegaard's life was his breaking of his engagement with Regine Olsen,of which he later said "Had I had faith I would have married Regine'. Its relation to his 'thorn in the flesh' is one of the most speculated upon questions in regard to a philosopher's life.Kierkegaard was not only a writer of immense spiritual depth but also one of great irony and hidden humor.These Diaries do give a sense of the real Kierkegaard.They are accompanied by excellent explanatory notes.

Kierkegaard (1813-1855) was a Danish philosopher, theologian, poet, social critic, and religious author, who was the first existentialist philosopher. He wrote many other books, including Philosophical Fragments,Fear & Trembling; The Sickness Unto Death,Concluding Unscientific Postscript,Attack upon Christendom,The Concept of Irony,The Concept of Dread,Training in Christianity,Christian Discourses,Either/Or, etc.He wrote in 1837, "Each person takes his revenge on the world. Mine consists in carrying my grief and anguish deeply embedded within myself, while my laughter entertains all. If I see somebody suffer I sympathize with him, console him to the best of my ability, and listen to him quietly when he assures me that I am fortunate. If I can keep this up to the day of my death I shall have had my revenge." (#15, Pg. 17-18)He observes sardonically, "In former days a man derived self-importance by being born noble, rich, etc.; today we have grown more liberal, more `world-historical,' now all of us derive self-importance from being born in the 19th century---Oh, Thou marvelous 19th century! Oh, enviable lot!" (#23, pg. 20-21)He points out, "It is an awful satire, and an epigram on the materialism of our modern age, that nowadays the only use that can be made of solitude is imposing it as a penalty, as jail. What a difference there is between those times when, no matter how secular materialism always was, man believed in the solitude of the convent, when, in other words, solitude was revered as the highest, as the destiny of Eternity---and the present when it is detested as a curse and is used only for the punishment of criminals. Alas, what a change." (#27, pg. 23)He reveals, "Torn to pieces as I was inside, without any prospect of leading a humanly happy life here below... without any hope of a happy, cosy future---as most naturally results from and rests in the historical continuity of domestic family-life---what wonder that in despairing desperation I seized upon the intellectual side of man only and clung to it so closely that the thought of my considerable mental talents was my only consolation, ideas my only joy, human beings objects of indifference." (#39, pg. 31)He contends, "If Hegel had written his entire Logic and said in the Preface that it was merely an idea-experiment for the sake of argument, wherein even in many places he had shirked something, he might well have been the greatest thinker that ever lived. As it is, he is comical." (#99, pg. 89)He states, "If by means of research in the natural sciences something could be found that would help to define the concept of mind and spirit, I would be the first to acquire a microscope, and I hope I should be as persevering as anyone. However, as I easily perceive by qualitative dialectic that... the world will not have advanced another step in 100,000 years, I will do precisely the opposite: preserve my soul and not waste one second of my life on curiosity." (#116, pg. 96)He explains, "I am accused of causing young people to acquiesce in subjectivity. Maybe, for a moment. But how would it be possible to eliminate all the phantoms of objectivity that act as an audience, etc., except by stressing the category of the separate individual. Under the pretext of objectivity the aim has been to sacrifice individualities entirely. That is the crux of the matter." (#121, pg. 101-102)He argues, "Actually, a Reformation for the purpose of abolishing the Bible now would have a good deal more validity than Luther's abolition of the Pope. This thing about the Bible has developed religiosity in scholarly and legalistic circles, but merely as entertainment. A sort of `learning' in that field has gradually seeped down to the very lowest class, and no one any longer reads the Bible merely as an individual human being. But this way of reading it causes irreparable harm; it then comes to be a stronghold for apologies and evasions etc. in relation to LIVING, for there is constantly some reference one must look up, and always this sham that one must make sure the doctrine is in perfect shape before one can begin to live in accordance with it---which means that one never gets around to it. The Bible Societies, this insipid caricature of the Missions, a company which, just like any other business-company, works with money ... in just as worldly a way as other enterprises their wares: the Bible Societies have done irreparable harm." (#135, pg. 110-111)He suggests, "Oh Socrates, Thou Noble Sage! Amid the crowd, surrounded by these thousands upon thousands, thou workest to split up `the herd' and seek out `the individual' that represents man's spiritual destiny. And Bernard [of Clairvaux] was a Christian, and it was in Christendom that it happened---and Socrates was a pagan---and yet there is more Christianity in the Socratic method than in the method of Saint Bernard." (#161, pg. 127)He confesses, "It is true that I believe in forgiveness for our sins, but I understand it in this way: that I must bear my penalty as heretofore, which means that I must remain in the painful prison of my reserve to the end of my days, remote, in a deeper sense, from community with others---yet feeling my penalty attenuated by the thought that God has forgiven me. I cannot, at least not yet, rise so high in faith... that I can eliminate this painful memory by faith. By clinging to faith I ward off despair, bear the pain and penalty of my reserve---and am so indescribably happy or blissful in that activity of mind and spirit which God so plentifully and mercifully has vouchsafed me. (#167, pg. 132-133)He laments, "My task is new in this sense that in the 1800th year of Christianity there is literally no one from whom I can learn how to go about it." (#179, pg. 147)He asserts, "There is only one proof of the truth of Christianity: the inner proof... In the Epistle of St. John (1, 5, 9) this is hinted... It is not the reasons that motivate belief in the Son of God, but the other way round, belief in the Son of God constitutes the evidence." (#201, pg.164-165) He adds, "A dogmatic system should not be built on the basis of understanding faith, but on the basis of understanding that one cannot understand faith." (#202, pg. 165)He proposes, "No, I would be tempted to make Christianity another proposition: Let us gather in every single copy of the New Testament, let us cart the whole collection out to an open place, or up a mountain top, and then, while all of us kneel down, let someone speak to God, saying: Take it back, this book; we humans, the way we are, should not get involved with such a book; it only makes us unhappy. Now, I suggest that... we ask Christ to take another road. That would be talking honestly and humanly---something else than this disgusting, hypocritical parson's twaddle about life being of no value to us without the invaluable boon of Christianity." (#216, pg. 177)He adds, "Thus with the worship of God in Christianity. Man too has wings; he has imagination. It is meant to help him really to soar---but all we do is play, we let imagination entertain us in a quiet hour, in a Sunday reverie, and for the rest we stay as we were; then on Monday we regard it as God's grace that we grow plump, fat, tasty and put on an extra layer of yellow fat, save money, acquire prestige in the world, beget many children and are successful---all this we regard as proof of God's grace. But those who really get involved with God... suffer and look worried, have trouble, toil and affliction---of those we say: There, it is quite obvious that they don't enjoy the grace of God." (#217, pg. 178-179)He concludes, "Christianity can be communicated only by witnesses, i.e. by men who existentially express what they proclaim, realize it in their lives." About the Author Tim Cooper has been developing real-time embedded and signal processing software for commercial and military applications for over 30 years. Mr. Cooper has authored numerous device drivers, board support packages, and signal processing applications for real-time-operating systems. Mr. Cooper has also authored high-performance signal processing libraries based on SIMD architectures. Other signal processing experience includes MATLAB algorithm development and verification, and working with FPGA engineers to implement and validate signal processing algorithms in VHDL. Much of Mr. Cooper's experience involves software development for systems having hard real-time requirements and deeply embedded processors, where software reliability, performance, and latency are significant cost drivers. Such systems typically require innovative embedded instrumentation that collects performance data without competing for processing resources. Mr. Cooper holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Sciences and a Master's degree in Computer and Electronics Engineering from George Mason University.

The titular Highly Sensitive Persons are intelligent, creative, idealistic and possessed of a strong work ethic. But unlike other workers, they suffer under routine, can be bothered by the sensory environment (the hum of fluorescent lights, workplace odors), might go through cycles of enthusiastic over-stimulation followed by brooding withdrawal, and might even dissolve in tears when pressured by deadlines and criticism. "Work Purpose Coach" Jaeger, following Elaine Aron's The Highly Sensitive Person, insists that HSPs stand up for their right to be sensitive. She provides HSP readers with useful tips on how to monitor oneself, relax and set boundaries to avoid getting overwhelmed; how to face down office bullies; and, using carefully scripted model monologues, how to inform coworkers and supervisors of one's needs as an HSP (talk about "fatigue" rather than "depression," for example). Her goal is to help HSPs ascend from Drudgery, through the "purgatory" of Craft, to their true Calling-which involves "a blending of the intense mind with the love and joy of our imagination and emotions" and leads to being "lifted, inevitably, up toward Heaven." The book is most compelling in its desciptions of Drudgery, which draw on writers like Barbara Ehrenreich to detail what some have termed the "modern slavery" of the corporate workplace. Unfortunately, Jaeger's priority is less to reform the workplace than to survive or escape it, if necessary, through self-employment. Still, readers will find this a perceptive guide to easing their torments.

This book enlarges upon The Highly Sensitive Person (1996), by Elaine Aron, who descibes the HSP as someone whose nervous system is particularly susceptible to stimuli. HSPs are more sensitive not only to their physical environments but also to emotional trauma. Jaeger believes that about 20 percent of the population can be descibed as HSPs and that the personality type may be inherited. In discussing the work environment, Jaeger recommends that HSPs avoid drudgery, which is particularly devastating because HSPs are generally creative types who thrive on new challenges. Jaeger also advises that craftwork can quickly deteriorate into drudgery for HSPs, who often remain in a job they hate for too long because of commitments or fear. Instead, HSPs need to find more fulfilling work, which the author refers to as a calling. Jaeger says the particular needs of HSPs include stress management, rest and healing, learning the importance of saying no, and dealing with abusive co-workers. Jaeger includes case studies and quotes from numerous HSPs to illustrate the advantages of finding satisfying work. David Siegfried

Dr Hoehner makes several serious mistakes, I believe. One is his careless claim, along with most other OT Chronologers, that the OT dates are Julian. I would seek to prove to anyone, otherwise --- but this is not the place for it. Anyone interested please contact for discussion.There are several others also, such as his coming out with a date for our Lord's birth at 5 BC, which has several weaknesses. (1) If Herod's death date was actually in 4 BC, as was commonly claimed, which Dr. Jack Finegan shows is probably wrong by a few years, because of its being based on a misinterpretation of Josephus, as he convincingly claims. Stranger yet is the fact that Dr. Hoehner had to have seen it, and been aware of it, yet ignored it in his arguments for 5 BC birthdate. (2) 5 BC obviously does not allow for the time for the flight into Egypt, according to the Matthew account. Herod was clearly still alive 2 years after the date of the Star (Matthew 2:9, etc); and there surely had to be more time yet involved.However, all of Dr. Hoehner's faults are thrillingly eclipsed with his masterful, and now accepted by every good scholar IMO, study of the Seventy Weeks and the resulting Crucifixion date of Friday, Nisan 14, April 3, AD 33. And the "Triumphal Entry" date of Monday, March 30, Nisan 10, perfectly agreeing with Exodus 12:3,6 and every other detail.BobChrist Died to Save YouBob

Dr. Hoehner approaches his subject by addressing seven specific issues in understanding the chronology and dating in the life of Christ. He begins with the date of the birth of Christ, coming to the conclusion that 4BC is the only date possible. Through this section, he deals with the record of Herod's death, including the eclipse most often used in the dating process, and various problems (such as Luke's statement that Jesus was about 30 years old when he began his ministry).The author's second chapter deals with the year in which Christ began his ministry, and the third chapter with the duration of the ministry of Christ. The length of ministry is primarily limited by the Feasts listed in the Gospel of John; two Passovers are mentioned explicitly, and one Passover is implied. After some consideration of the other available options, Dr. Hoehner concludes that three years is the best option available.The day on which Christ was crucified is the next subject at hand; Dr. Hoehner concludes that Friday is the correct day, though he does propose that Thursday appears to be possible. He spends some time considering the problem of Jesus eating the Passover with the Apostles, and then the Pharisees not wanting to enter Herod's house because they had not yet eaten the Passover themselves. To resolve this problem, he argues that the Passover was eaten on two successive days because of two different traditions among Jews from different areas of the country.Chapter five considers the year in which Christ was crucified. The primary evidence here is the timing of the Passover in each year, along with any external evidence. He concludes that the year must have been 33, making Jesus around 37 years old when he was crucified. Finally, Dr. Hoehner considers the prophecy of Daniel 9, and the beginning and termination points of the 70 weeks.Overall, this is a good resource for those who want to go beyond the basics and dive into the thinking and research required to build a solid chronology of the life of Christ. Well worth reading for those who are at all interested in studying the three and a half years of Christ's ministry.

This was my first encounter with the works of Dr. Hoehner and I have to admit that I am very impressed with the level of research that he has done on the chronology of the Life of Jesus as recorded in the New Testament. He is certainly knowledgeable on the subject and has proven himself by earning a Ph.D at Cambridge. This work is an excellent resource and here are a few of the reasons that I think this book is well worth the investment.Dr. Hoehner is very logical in his approach. His style is bland and clinical so you wont find any quotables. He considers various possibilities for every date that he sets forth. He starts with the birth of Christ and eliminates various years proposed for his birth by using a very systematic format. He proceeds on to show the date for the beginning of his ministry. He moves from date-to-date very even-handed and at no time does he try to force an interpretation to his favor. He often deals with problems that face his own postulations and try to work out a viable answer which he usually does very well. He goes through the crucifixion and the resurrection giving a very convincing reason as to why he accepts 33 A.D. as year of the Lord's Passion. He even demonstrates the likelihood that Christ was actually crucified on a Friday. After, he then compares notes with Daniel's 70 weeks and shows how that all the evidence falls in favor of the date he has established.I am no expert on the chronology of Jesus' life although I am not ignorant of it either. However, I do have a degree in history from the University of Illinois at Springfield and I do know that his method for coming to these conclusions is excellent. Many writings on this subject will often require a lot of guesswork and assumption which is not the case here. The historical data that he presents about Pilate and Herod shed a great deal of light in explaining why Pilate and Herod gave into the mob that wanted Jesus to be crucified. He shows how that there is a way to reconcile the caricatures of Tacitus and Josephus with those of the gospel writers about these two men.This book is accessible and can be followed by anyone with or without a background in this field. One thing I wish he would have done is to give a better rational as to why he thought Jesus may have been born in December and I wish he had give more charts to look at. But these are minor criticisms and do not in any way detract from the work. If you are doing a study of the gospels or the life of Christ you will do yourself a favor to pick up a copy of this book.
