I wrote after just scanning and though it okay. But after more fully reviewing it, I'm under-impressed. David Busch has written several camera specific books, most of them have received good reviews. But this book is not in that league. It is written for people who want to turn their a6300 into a sophisticated point and shoot camera. Extensive coverage of all the "scene" settings, and features that only work on jpeg images, ready for uploading to Facebook, not for serious photographers (There are a few bows to shooting RAW and to using more sophistication, but not many. The sections on face recognition, eye focus, and follow focus are far too short to be useful. This is one example.I am very disappointed in the factual errors. I would send the thing back if there were any alternative. But Sony's own manual is so bad, this is the only option.Gary Friedman's book on the a6000 is better written. Darrell Young's books on all the Nikons are great, but he doesn't have the Sonys in his sights. So this is what we have. If there were an alternative, I would go down to one star, but three stars is generous.
This book is excellent. But you do need to know what it is and what it isn’t. It isn’t a guide to digital photography in general. It is a very detailed and readable owners manual for this camera. Sony is known for many outstanding things but not their user’s manuals. You will want this book instead. The a6300 has a very complex menu system with more than 140 individual settings. It also allows you customize many of the 20 or so buttons, switches, and dials. And it has a customizable function menu. This book addresses every one of these in enough detail for you to decide if you want to change from the defaults. The author also gives his choice of settings for many of them and explains why. Four chapters of the book are devoted to these items. In addition, the a6300 has a very sophisticated autofocus system and there is also an excellent chapter on this. I bought the Kindle version and have it on my phone and iPad as a reference. I have already had several occasions to refer back to it. I don’t do much video so I can’t say anything about the book for this purpose. If you are a still photographer and want to use the camera beyond the default Auto functions, you really need this book.
Like any book on a camera, your mileage will vary based on what you need to learn. I spent a plane ride reading the book on my Kindle App (the printer version would be far easier to see the pictures) and discovered several settings that I had not paid any attention to in the past. The book is well laid out and an easy read - it's not bogged down with a ton of jargon, but it is also not a Dummy's Guide. The more you understand about basic photography the more use this book will be.I would recommend people looking to maximize their use of the A6300 pick this book up. It's far better than the manual and due to Sony's odd naming in the menus will probably help many people get the most out of their camera.(-1 star for Kindle version because I struggled trying to match the txt with the photos )
I can't stand factory camera manuals. The Sony a6300 manual is just bad as my Nikon D800 manual. I hate how it refers to the camera as "the product". It gets the job done but takes lots more time, and the font and page size make it hard to read.David Busch's manuals are well written and easy to understand. I don't read them cover-to-cover, but instead use them as a detailed reference book. I'm already familiar with photography theory, so I can skip the basic tutorial sections and go to the camera-specific sections. I like the fact that the author explains not only how to use certain functions, but why one may want to use them and the results that may be expected.
What comes with this camera is not much about the "how too's" but Dave's book is a God send and if you want to know how to use all the features of the A6300 you really need this book. I bought my A6300 before Dave's book was out and could never figure out how to use Clear Image or Digital zoom on the camera. I asked the photography forums but never got a workable response. I opened up Dave's book to page 82 and he laid out step by step procedures to use various zooms. This is my third book from Dave on various cameras and have never been disappointed. He covers every aspect of the camera. I highly recommend his books.
I pre-ordered this book and let me say.. By the time it arrived I felt pretty comfortable with using my A6300BUTI find that I'm always referencing this book, going back looking things up. I carry this with me on every shoot (I've only done 2).I can tell David put alot of energy and time into this and it's become a very useful guide for me.
This book is an excellent compliment to your a6300. It goes into major depth of each and every button and menu selections function. The color graphics and authors recommendations give great insight into possible ways to set up the camera. Also, it give many good subjects to further research online or from other books. The a6300 can be customized to many different ways and you need expanded information in addition to the standard user manual the camera comes with, this book is just that. I highly recommend it.
A person really needs a book like this to understand and use a camera like the Sony a6300. The manufacturer's booklet isn't too good explaining how to use the camera and get the most from it. Love the camera and I love the book.
